The Q's coach yard was in Minneapolis just north of the GN depot along the
Mississippi River. Trains were turned on the wye near the depot. Between
Mpls. and St. Paul, the Q used the GN mains. Upon arriving in St. Paul the
train would pull south past Division St. tower and the SPUD roundhouse etc. and
back into the depot. Departure was out of the platforms and turn south, proceed
to Chicago. The westerrn trains(EB, WS, NCL & MS) would swap power at SPUD in
both directions. The Zephyrs and Blackhawk would keep their Q power to Mpls.
Exception was the eastbound Blackhawk which would pull in add a sleeper on
therear and back out before going to Chicago. Check the file section of this
website for track maps on Mpls. and St. Paul. The northbound Blackhawk as
well as the other Q, GN, & NP trains would pull north of Div. St. etv. and
back into the depot platforms. The northbound Blackhawk would take its St.
Paul setout sleeper to
Mpls so it could be cleaned and restocked. A transfer run would get it later
and bring it over to SPUD and place it on the eastward end of a
platform(probabaly a stub track).
Subject: [CBQ] St Paul
Depot and Ops
What was the layout of the St Paul depot - did the Q enter at river level or
was it elevated? Where was the coach yard? Did the Q have track beyond St Paul
(for transfers to GN/NP)? Did Q back in when they arrived? Thanks.
