Fred
If you look back through the List archives, you'll find quite a bit of detail
about Chinese red.
The first CB&Q cars painted in Chinese red were #62500-63999, class XM-32F 40'
steel box cars, with #62500 being built at Havelock
in January 1958.
Other Havelock cars painted in the new scheme in 1958 were -
90 GM-4A 70 ton mill gondolas 52' 6" of the group 82550-83149
50 GM-3D 70 ton mill gondolas 65' 6" numbered 197180-197229
FD-1 150 ton depressed centre flatcar 72' 3" numbered 91875
Other Chinese red cars that year were -
100 HC-3 41' PS-2 covered hoppers numbered 85100-85199
75 LO-1B 29' 6" Airslide covered hoppers from General American numbered
87300-87374
In passing, the first repaint of a diesel was possibly E-7A #9929A,
photographed in July 1958, the first road switchers to get the
scheme were GP-7 #238 (February 1959) and Colorado & Southern's SD-9 #828
(March 1959) which were rebuilt after wrecks, whilst the
first new diesels were the SD-24's which started to appear in May 1959. The
only yard switched to be painted Chinese red was #605
FW&D
The last Chinese red unit was probably GP9 #1960, and that was repainted (into
BN Cascade green and black) at Livingston, Montana
December 29, 1976
