Some of the early stainless steel passenger cars with disk brakes had sand boxes(and automatic systems for application) for braking purposes. From: Mike Cafferata <mcaff1@htc.net> To: CBQ@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2011 11:45 AM Subject: Re: [CBQ] Streamlined Jim Crow Coach Looking at CB&Q passenger car plans in a book from Railway Production Classics, a later modification seems to have taken place. Silver Crown is listed separately from the other cars that were built at the same time. The Jim Crow restrooms were built in the area of the original men's room. There is no other men's room in this car. As fate would have it, another oddity has surfaced. I was looking at other coaches in this book as well and see that Silver Leaf has an odd opening on each side of the men's restrooms at the vestibule end. There are boxes on the interior of the car marked "sand". Any idea why a coach would have sand boxes? Silver Leaf was originally assigned to the General Pershing Zephyr. The other GPZ coach, Silver Eagle, does not show the sand boxes.
