John,
That is very surprising and interesting! It's amazing what you can learn on
this list! On the same note, the blueprints of the 14th Street coachyard shows
the facilities for the workers having separate restrooms for whites and blacks
- so it wasn't just Southern Illinois...

The Q operated a CW-6 (3992) with an eight passenger Jim Crow compartment from
Centralia,Illinois to Paducah, Kentucky on trains 71-72 until the 1940's. In
that regard, this was very much the south. During that same time, the IC
segregated their passenger trains as far north as Carbondale, Illinois (up to
the late 50's).

Mike,
Those two coaches for the C&S were 600 and 601 - Silver Mine and Silver Spur
for the TZ. The diagram shows no Jim Crow section, but Randall may be using a
generic diagram here. I'm sure Hol will straighten us out!

Maybe the car was intended for possible use on the Texas Zephyr. I checked
Randall's "From Zephyr to Amtrak" and see that the C&S and FW&D purchased
Budd cars for the TZ in 1937, 1938 and 1940. Were those coaches of the Jim
Crow configuration? Just a thought.
