Rich The Q operated a CW-6 (3992) with an eight passenger Jim Crow compartment from Centralia,Illinois to Paducah, Kentucky on trains 71-72 until the 1940's. In that regard, this was very much the south. During that same time, the IC segregated their passenger trains as far north as Carbondale, Illinois (up to the late 50's). The diagram shows no Jim Crow section, but Randall may be using a generic diagram here. I'm sure Hol will straighten us out! I checked Randall's "From Zephyr to Amtrak" and see that the C&S and FW&D purchased Budd cars for the TZ in 1937, 1938 and 1940. Were those coaches of the Jim Crow configuration? Just a thought.
