Rich The tank cars in the 231000 series were TM-5/A/B class. They were numbered 151000-151124 when built in 1918 and were renumbered to 231000-231124 (TM-5A) in about 1938 when all tank cars were renumbered. At about this time, steam coils were added. Some were renumbered to 230800-230924 (TM-5B) when the heater coils were removed, and 21 of them were renumbered to 231125-231145 when heater coils were put back again. I can't help with the dates of the TM-5B work. Individual cars were renumbered into the MoW number series (such as 204300, 205400) when assigned to oil or water service, and twelve of the cars were renumbered by BN in 1970 to 974053-974064. There is a photo of 231036 on page 121 of Mike Spoor's Color Guide and a photo of 231039 in Bulletin 36 on page 46. The intended model in the articles was for the 12,000 gallon 231000 series, but used photos of the 232000 series. I have not been able to find any photos of the 231000 series.
