An exception to the non-reclassification of early oil conversions was the O-2
Mikes, which were reclassed O-2-B when converted to oil. O-2-A was the class
given to rebuilt O-2s with new cylinders and valve gear in the 1920s.

Cy,
That is basically correct. Of course, two of the O-5s converted to oil were
from the second group and were also classed as O-5B. These were 5614 and 5620.
Of the oil burners (all six converted in the early 1950s), only two still
exist. Those are 5614 at St. Joseph, MO and 5629 at the Colorado Railway Museum
in Golden, CO. The others converted to oil were 5626, 5627 and 5632. All the
rest remained O-5As to the end. Two hudsons were also converted to oil. Those
were the 4002 and 4003.
Interestingly, Q began converting locomotives in other classes to oil as far
back as the 1920s. However, most if not all of those, did not carry the "B" sub
classification. They simply were classed with their original or previous
classification. As an example, the USRA heavy 2-8-2s were classed O-4, but did
not become O-4Bs after conversion to oil. It appears that the idea of a special
class for oil burning locomotives did not evolve until the later conversion of
the O-5s and S-4s. On the roster sheets, there was a special symbol designating
an oil burning locomotive as there was also for those that burned lignite coal.
Sure would be nice to have a bulletin on the O-5s of the caliber of the Hudson
bulletin. After all, the O-5s were the zenith of Q's steam power.
