Ray, one source of freight car information is an Official Railway Equipment Register. It lists nearly all the cars used on North American railroads including car numbers and dimensions - inside and out - for rolling stock of all kinds. Frequently listing Gross weight, light weight, inside dimensions, maximum loading, outside dimensions, brake types and lots of other details for the equipment. The ORER was published several times per year, as equipment rosters changed frequently. Early copies can be found via Google Books. Copies can also be found on Ebay. Westerfield sells CD copies. The NMRA did two reprints, 1943 and 1953. And I believe that Rupert was working on an all-time roster. He may be able to help.
