I just had to respond to the use of "speeder" in the dialog concerning the
laser
tool house/motor car shed kits. After a youth spent on Extra gangs on the C&S
and UP, and a brief career as a Track Supervisor, Assistant Roadmaster and
Rules examiner on the D&RGW, I still find the term speeder irritating. I think
the first time I saw it in print was in one of the modeling magazines and my
thoughts were "Where were these people raised?". Granted there is great
potential for confusion, particularly if you are a follower of the Q , what
with
Motor Cars, i.e.Gas-Electrics; Motors, i.e. Diesel-Electric locomotives;and
finally Motor cars of the MOW track-car variety. So, bowing to the
political
correctness of today, I will silently roll my eyes when the term speeder pops
up, knowing that they are actually referring to the Fairmont [and other brands]
type of MOW track car.
The other subject of interest is the abbreviation PHP from the Operating Data
Sheets. Of course the Packing House Products interpretation is correct,
particularly when you look at the sources of such traffic: Scottsbluff, Souix
City, Omaha, Fremont, Denver and so on. While meat products, tallow, hides and
the like come to mind, my personal memory is from working the UP extra-board
and
always working the week-end shifts that pulled gondolas full of animal scraps
destined for rendering plants in Kansas City. Not only was riding the cars a
gut-turning experience, but we would have to weigh them prior to classifying
them to their respective tracks. Just the thing to top off a hot summer
afternoon. Just thought I'd share a few memories. Jim Sandrin

Thank you all so much for the treasure trove of information. My model railroad
is tiny, but I am trying to get things as correct as I can. I promise from now
on to call motorcars by their correct name. (When I was little I called them
putt-putts )
The kits I am getting has a Fairmont motorcar and cart included. The cars
themselves are made by Shapeways using rapid prototype technology. I will
also attempt to build a shed from scratch. I will post pictures when completed
Thanks again!!

The Q Connection at one time offered an HO scale model of the CB&Q "Tool
House". Dave Lotz may have some additional information, including
measurements.

Pulling out the instruction sheet for the Q Connection(now Laserkit)
"CB&Q Standard Tool House" it quotes drawing #65755 5/8 as 14' wide,
12' deep and 10' 6 " tall. The drawing for the track shows the rail
from track to the shed is a 4" x 4" x 17' wood beam.

Before someone takes me to task for using the term "speeder" in BB35. I must
add
that someone else added that term after I wrote it. My section foreman
grandfather would have skinned me alive for calling a motor car anything
besides
a motor car.

Thanks one and all great information. Now the question is, did some have doors
on the right and others doors on the left?? (looking at shed)
Were they all red or did they have green trim?
Goodness last time I seen a speeder shed, was I'd say 15 years ago, in Tamaroa
Il on the old Mopac line, right after it crosses the IC line and curves off
towards Waltonville. I should check Google earth to see if it is still there
but
I doubt it.

John
I hate it when editors do that...I once had the editor of our local railfans
club newsletter change the name of a town that I had written about because he
couldn't find it on a map...The fact that I had worked locals through that
town
and it is (was) in the timetable, apparently made no difference.

Help me lobby for HO scale models...

Groupee's…
As the gap widens between transition-era and modern-day time periods, modelers
of the 1960's and early 1970's can be left behind. I am trying to organize an
email campaign to the major model railroad manufacturers in an effort to
produce
these highly-needed, long-unavailable, quality HO scale models. If you feel
that
these items are essential to your modeling efforts, I invite you to copy and
paste the body of this message into a new email and forward it on your own
behalf to the model manufacturers. I have also provided a contact list that you
can use to forward the message.

1. A U25C/U28C in plastic, with all the different phases represented. A
highly-detailed shell and a solid mechanism with optional sound and DCC,
lettered for NP, CB&Q, and BN plus post-merger renumbered versions. This
locomotive is marketable across the United States through the many roads that
owned them. More U25C/U28C's were produced than over a dozen other locomotives
that are currently available in highly-detailed HO scale models.
2. Accurate 50' combination door/double door boxcars. Both the Athearn and
Accurail combo door boxcars do not have the requisite 6' right-hand door
opening
to make them accurate. Number series for these cars would be NP's 3882-3999,
5000-5295, CB&Q's 47500-47789, 49000-49399, GN's 38000-38299, and subsequent BN
number series. While each of these car series has subtle detail differences,
the
model could be engineered in such a way that several different types of doors
could be used to reasonably represent all of the above. Cars from each railroad
could also be found in at least two different paint schemes: NP Brown, Dark
Green and Cascade Green, CB&Q Chinese Red or Cascade Green, GN Glacier Green or
Big Sky Blue, and BN Cascade Green with full billboard lettering, 80's
"stealth"
lettering, or 90's "Tri-line" lettering. Not a single 50' boxcar on the market
today even comes close to these. Modeler's Choice marketed a styrene kit but
they are unavailable today.
3. International Car Co. Wide Vision Caboose. The Atlas model is close, but the
cupola is not tall enough for most western railroads. If a modern caboose model
was designed in the same way as the Walthers passenger cars (i.e. a central
"core", with interchangeable sides, ends, roofs, and cupolas,) a well-detailed
model could be produced in nearly every railroad that had these cars.
4. AC&F 5250 cu ft. 4-Bay grain hoppers i.e. GN 171250-171449. The same 57' 11"
body could be fitted with a 3-Bay floor and be correct for CB&Q 86200-86699,
FW&D 3051-3150, BN 453100-453589, 455800-455999. The Athearn model similar to
these is horribly cumbersome by today's standards.
5. FGE 50' Mechanical Refrigerator Cars i.e. WFCX (GN) 8100-8199, WFEX (GN)
800-849, BRMX (CB&Q) 120-149, NPM 100-149, various BNFE number series.
Currently
available only as a resin kit from WrightTrack Models.
6. General American 4,500 cu ft. i.e. GN 171050-171099, CB&Q 85700-86199, and
BN
451200-451599. Nothing even close is currently available.
7. PC&F 40' Mechanical Refrigerator Cars i.e. NPM 501-525, WFEX (GN) 7900-7949.
Nothing even close is currently available.

And that someone was undoubtedly me, though I don't remember making the
change. As an editor I would probably make the change again today,
simply to differentiate the small section gang conveyances, which are
commonly known today a speeders and were also often called pop cars for
their sound, from larger passenger motor cars, which the Q called just
that: passenger motor cars. Sorry that I'm presumably the one
responsible for this discussion! Hol Wagner Date: Wed, 20 Jul 2011

In computer terminology it stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, a
recursive acronym.

Date of Construction of Signal Bridge at Albia, Iowa
Posted by: "zephyr98072" glenehaug@msn.com zephyr98072
Wed Jul 20, 2011 6:43 pm (PDT)
I posted a similar message on the Railway Signaling group, but got no response.
I am trying to determine the date that the 3 track signal bridge was
constructed
that was a few hundred feet east of the depot at Albia, and part of an
interlocking between CB&Q and Wabash.
There is a photo album in the Railway Signaling group entitled "Union Switch
and
Signal Co" that contains several photographs of the diagram of this
interlocking, and I noticed that the signal bridge is included on the diagram.
Perhaps someone on this group is also on the Railway Signaling group, and can
tell me if they recognize the interlocking diagram in the photos, and the date
that this particular interlocking was constructed. The signal bridge is at
least as old as the interlocking depicted in the photos.
Thanks for any info.
