Do we have a lawyer in the group?  The gov't used to tax vhs tapes to cover 
copying & copywright.  Wouldn't hurt to find out if they did this on dvd's.  To 
collect the copywright fee, the owners had to file to receive their cut; if 
they didn't "uncle" pocketed it.

I work at a video production company in KC. One of the things we do is convert 
VHS to DVD for consumers.
You are correct. It is copy righted material, but if it is just for your 
entertainment there is no problem. Now, if
you were to show it and make $$$, it would be a different situation all 
together.
