Leo, I don’t know the reason, other than I've noticed that only the "newer" cast keys seem to have numbers on them, at least the ones I have seen. Probably the numbers were an attempt to keep track of the keys, I heard of an instance where they did some keys that weren't marked and it took longer for them to be "lost". I have an old Milwaukee switch lock made of brass, ironically a Milwaukee key won't work in it, but a C&NW will, go figure.......
