>From the Galesburg Register Mail's Tom Wilson's 10/21/10 article:

Drastic means to conserve needed supplies of water were taken by the CB&Q
Railroad in the fall of 1923. Galesburg Division Superintendent W.E. Fuller
issued an order to trains approaching Galesburg to take on full tanks of water
at nearby towns because of a diminishing supply locally.

One of the main water suppliers was Lake Rice, east of town. However the recent
measurement revealed only 12 feet of water at its deepest spot, being the
lowest depth in many years. It was concluded that only a series of heavy rains
would relieve the problem.

Trains coming into Galesburg were ordered to take on a full tank of water at
Avon, Alpha and Yates City. It was decided that if sufficient rains didn't
occur soon that hauling water from the Mississippi River would become necessary.

How many could have thought at the time that hauling water from the Mississippi
would be the savior for the entire area's water supply and the importance of
water to operate trains would greatly diminish? It is also interesting that the
railroad's need for water made Soangetaha, Lake Bracken and Lake Storey become
a reality.

From the Railway & Locomotive Engineer January 1900 -

One of the largest reservoirs ever constructed is to be built by the Chicago,
Burlington & Quincy Railroad for the purpose of supplying its engines with
water. It will be located five miles southeast of Galesburg, a division point
on the main line, 163 miles from Chicago. The reservoir will be two and a half
miles long, 1,500 feet wide and 20 feet deep, and will have a capacity of
445,000,000 gallons.
