Hi Bill,
You said:
"First, let me preface my comments by saying that I do not follow the GN nor
to I know a lot about their activities except as they may have influenced
the Q."
A mirror image of my interests - I follow the Q because of
the influence it had on the GN lines.
"I certainly do not know the history of Gavin Yard and it wasn't my
intent to upset GN fans as I thought my comment was true and benign."
I never considered that to be your intent. You were merely
passing on the comments of the two individuals you quoted - nothing wrong
with that.
I was curious as to the source of the comment as in forty
years of following the GN I had never heard that opinion made about Gavin.
I was curious as to the origin, in particular if it had come from GN (not
BN) officers.
That it was made by the individuals referred to, offering
their own opinion, post merger indicates to me it was a personal opinion
offered up by the two individuals, and not the result of any GN era
operational analysis that suggested it shouldn't have been built.
It doesn't surprise me that Gavin has been down sized post
merger as the facilities of the combined roads (including the upgraded
Northtown yard) and changes in traffic patterns and styles required another
round of physical plant rationalization. Your observations from your post
merger trips through the area reflect the results of those changes.
See my response to Chuck Hatter for some additional data I
was able to pull out of one of the GNRHS reference sheets with regard to
Gavin.
Should you ever have any GN questions you need answers on,
please feel free to drop me a line. I might not have the answer, but I
should be able to steer you in the right direction.
Best regards,
Steve Haas
