Archie, sand was used for bedding in stockcars. It provided traction for
footing and had to be cleaned out each time the car was unloaded. Just about
every stock yard or pen had bedding material available for placing in
stockcars.

The AAR published Pamphlet #19 "Methods for Loading and Handling Live Stock"
in 1925 (revised 1942) which gives the following instructions.

#2 . Sand bedding is most satisfactory for livestock in warm weather - an
even spread of one inch or more must be placed on the car floor; more may be
desirable for horses. In cold weather, hay or straw must be added and cars
for hog loading must have the hay or straw bedding piled about one foot high
around the sides and ends of the car to act as a wind breaker. Not less than
one and one-half bales must be used per deck and in extreme weather at least
two. Bales to approximate in weight 200 lbs.

#29 Called for the bedding to be wet down before loading of hogs and chunks
of ice in burlap bags to be hung from the roof of the car during hot weather
to provide cooling for hogs.

I have a ATSF brochure that calls for 2" of sand. I have seen other
references to 4" of sand. The ATSF indicated that cinders, used by a few,
were not acceptable. Cinders having sharp edges could cause damage to feet
and skin should an animal get down.
