The machine had a long chain flight conveyer boom, at about half way to the end
was a swivel joint that allowed the boom to bend 180 degrees. In operation the
operator would bend it to throw coal into one end of the boxcar. When that end
was full, boom was turned to load the other end. When that end was full, the
boom was then pulled back so the door area could be filled. The open door was
boarded up with 2X12's to within about two feet from the up of top of the
door. When the middle of the boxcar was filled, the door was closed. There were
not too many boxcars to load on a given day, maybe only one or two so, Dad
didn't run it all shift. He went back to his usual job which was riding empty
cars off the raw coal car turnover, which was another interesting piece of
machinery.

I don't have one that I can find. I have a line drawing of one in a turn of the
century (20th) mining engineering book but I couldn't locate when I was doing
BB#35. I wish I could have. Most people today can't imagine such a thing. I
watched it load one boxcar and that would been before 1959 as the plant was
closed that year.

Any chance you might find a photo of same at area His. Soc's John? I don't
recall pic of one in your Beardstown Bulletin. Indeed, quite a contraption -
would be a neat model either in place or being shipped on a Q flatcar.

In the early 1950's, my father would operate the Ottumwa boxcar loader at the
Zeigler #2 preparation plant on some days. This was mostly if not always in the
winter and was for receivers in the northern states. The boxcar loader was
quite a contraption

Ad from Ottumwa Box Car Loader Co (Railway Age 1920's) The company possibly
began as early as 1899 and apparently gone by the 1940's. Originally named for
its founder as the 'Phillips Box Car Loader Co.' and later possibly affiliated
with Ottumwa Iron Co. on W. 4th? Their Loaders used @ coal mines from Missouri
to Utah to Montana. Plant may or may not have been on CB&Q trackage in Ottumwa.
These loaders were part of a CB&Q Yahoo post on the subject in 2000. As they
were sized for 40' boxcars it's doubtful any can be found today unless modified
to load dump trucks or semi-trailer bodies? Anyone near Ottumwa to ck with
local or Wapello Co. His. Soc? Gerald
