Jon, As a follow-up to Ken's excellent response: can your friend describe what kind of car he saw with the 9014, 18 & 26 #'s? In that era they would have been revenue box cars if numbered in 9000's and to my knowledge no Q MoW equipment was numbered below 200000 post-WWII.
