Actually, I believe Amtrak engine crews working eastbound out of
Kansas City still "double the road" every day as long as the
Southwest Chief is on time. They leave KC at 7:43 am and arrive at
Ft. Madison, IA three hours and 26 minutes later at 11:09 am. They
lay over for 7 hour and 18 minutes and return westbound at 6:27 pm
and arrive inn KC 9:56 pm, 3 hours and 29 minutes later. I believe
they are off duty until the second morning when they repeat the
cycle. Two regular engineers and one swing man for the seventh day.
The train crew operates Chicago to KC and return. They arrive in KC
at 9:56 pm and return the next morning. Some portions of the KC to
Ft. Madison run operate at 90 mph.
