The entire line inc. (Winston tunnel) from Oelwein to St. Charles, IL was in use til a yr after C&NW absorption of CGW (absorbed in "68 so line abandoned "69?) I have a booklet at home on the tunnel (reputedly haunted & also full of poison ivy at one end). "Five motors" (Q E units) would not have been a problem exhaust-wise as CGW regularly ran up to 6-8 older F units on this line esp. when pulling a train of meat-laden reefers. But then they had dropped passenger service by late 60's so only exposed people would have been conductor & read brakeman but there too a saving grace was CGW ran 150+ car long freights. I.E. engines long out of the tunnel before the Pennsy style 'cabin' cabooses went in. I've seen photographs of it's west end showing a building called a ventilating house, so they may be just pulled air in one end out and out the other. The photos date from 1966 and the building looks like it had been out of service for quite some time.
