Just got the 2 paragraphs below forwarded to me from Bob Weber who got it on
CGW Yahoo list. Anyone @ that NRHS mtg that can add to this excerpt?
Responses to this post by CGW fans included wondering if anyone had a copy of
the various RR's detour routings as one poster recalled seeing one on the wall
@ M&StL hdq in Twin Cities. I happen to have a set of Q routings (prints in
book form) showing all possible system-wide alternate routes needed due to
derailments, floods, etc. The fact the Q was taking CGW from Portage to
Stockton & beyond tells me it may have been due to flooding (or loss of Milw/Q
crossing) in the Savanna, IL area as normally Q & Milw used each other's line
between Chi & Twin Cities as needed. Anyone have further info? Gerald
. . . I was in attendance for the October meeting of the NW Illinois Chapter
NRHS
and the story of a Q train detouring on the CGW was told. The train was routed
from
Portage to Stockton . . . it was the eastbound combined Empire Builder and one
of the
Zephyrs. Five motors were on the point, all Q Es . . . eighteen cars with a
number of
domes.
Winston (note: tunnel on CGW in NW Illinois) had ventilation system about
midway, correct?
All that diesel exhaust, 18 passenger cars, wonder how smelly the tunnel ride
would get for passengers?....
