I am raising this question to all three of the historical societies to which
I belong. As many of you know, I model HO diesels, especially of the
D&RGW. I have models of all the Rio Grande diesels from 1941 with one
exception. Does anyone have or know of a metal, plastic, or resin model of
the early GE 44 ton diesel, the so-called Phase Ia? D&RGW received one in
August 1941 and five more in September 1942. These engines all had the
early details of the GE 44 ton - hood vents, side radiator grilles, and
plain hood ends with maintenance entry doors.
The last unit - #43 - was damaged after delivery and returned to GE, where
it was rebuilt with the later Phase IIa style - plain hood doors and hood
end radiator shutters. This style is modeled by the Bachmann and Keystone
models. I have several of the Bachmann models, but their detail is
somewhat heavy. I also have photos of the W&R brass model, but I don't
want to pay brass prices for diesels.
If I cannot find an HO model of the Phase Ia style, then I will kitbash
Bachmann models to the earlier style. Does anyone have or know of scale
drawings of the Phase Ia style in any scale, preferably HO? I would
appreciate any help in this area, as this is the last diesel model I need to
complete the history of D&RGW diesel locomotives.
