Anyone have snapshots or know of a publication with photos of CB&Q's spur
into the Watkins plant and/or the adjacent "middle of the street" line running
to the downtown ticket office? Q came across the Mississippi from E. Winona
(GB&W shared the bridge) into southside of Winona with a couple industries
served there inc. a smaller Watkins facility & then turned due north via a
major street to reach their downtown ticket office. Enroute they served the
huge Watkins flagship plant/hdq. This multi-storied brick plant had a 'curve'
cut into the bldg to reach an internal loading dock. Tracks are gone now but
the unique 'architecture' remains. Well worth a little detour north if
traveling across MN in I-90. (Amtrak's version of the EPB stops at nearby at
ex-Milw now CP depot) The Hdq itself, attached to N side of plant, is a Nat.
His. bldg due to award winning art-deco design. See their website.
I need for an article in the Zephyr. Tks!
PS - Watkins is/was a major mfg & supplier of spices and other home foods &
medicines started by a "Dr." Watkins back in the late 1800's patent medicine
days. Similar to Rawleighs & other such companies that had local reps sell
door to door. Watkins also had farm animal products. To this day they're most
famous for their Watkins Vanilla, esp. in the midwest but in their heyday
Watkins had several plants across USA & in Canada. A major shipper in/out
bound on the Q "in the day".
