Jefferson St., IA (Burlington)

Ah, yes, the Jefferson Street "Station" in Burlington. When doing my
research for Burlington Bulletin Nos. 23 & 26, I frequently saw reference to
this station, but was frustrated that I could never find any mention of a
physical structure. But after a while it dawned on my that there was
probably no railroad building here at all. This was a the location where
the Burlington's Shop Train stopped to pick up Q employees to transport them
up the West Burlington Hill to work at the "Shops" and to drop them off
after their shift was over.

The Q's double-track main crosses Jefferson Street at a diagonal, just west
of 8th Street (and the Hobbycraft Shop) and down a hill to the east of
Central Avenue. The tracks go between two industries that both trigger
strong responses of the olfactory senses, one good, the other BAD! Two
blocks up the ravine to the south (the same ravine that begins at the Apple
Trees - Charles Perkins' strategically-purchased Burlington Estate) is
Bracewell Stadium, the old Burlington High School football and track field.
I remember well the mornings in gym class running around the track and
smelling the wonderful smell of fresh bread being baked in the bakery on the
north side of Jefferson, and the next day smelling the acrid, pungent,
almost nauseating smell emanating from the U.S. Borax Soap factory that was
on the south side of Jefferson. Running on those days was not pleasant at
all!!
