The earlier post was typed by me in columns but now I know that is 'lost' when
posted by Yahoo, hope you were able to understand which brands & models were
acceptable.

Closer examination of the 1931, updated to 1953 agreement with the BLE shows
the new watch standards went into effect 1 Apr 49 with the following note: 17
jewel watches IN SERVICE at time of this upgrade (17 jewels being the previous
minimum standard) were still acceptable IF in use prior to 1949 and if they ran
within 30 seconds variation per week. So in theory a Burlington railroader who
bought a then approved 17 jewel watch pre-49 could have kept it til he retired.
From speaking with RR watch collectors, CB&Q was among the few that
'grandfathered in' older watches whereas other RR's forced Emps to upgrade.

So who was req'd to have an "approved" watch? Per the 1949 agreement there
were TWO groups of Emps listed with group A being those Emps who must check
their watch daily or at beginning of each trip either with a standard clock or
approved crew members, etc, etc & group B which did not have this req.

A: Trainmasters & Asst TM's, Chief & Train Dispatchers, Road Foremen of Engines
& Asst RF, Conductors, Trainmen, Enginemen, Firemen, Train Baggagemen,
Yardmasters & Asst YM's, Yard Engine Foremen, Switchmen, Switchtenders and Main
Track Hostlers

B: Roadmasters & Asst RM's, Track Supervisors & Foremen & Asst Foremen, Head
Welders & Frog Welders, Work Equip Operators, Master Carpenters & Asst MC's,
B&B Gang Foremen & Asst GF, Paint Gang Foremen, Water Service Foremen & W.S.
Repairmen, Signal Supervisors & Asst SS, Signal Foremen, Leading Signal
Maintainers & SM's, Chief Telegraph Linemen & Division L., Telegraph Foremen
AND all other employees who operate Track Cars.

Question for the old heads: "Main Track Hostlers" - I assume were those
hostlers who were authorized to take an engine outside the roundhouse area and
onto "main" tracks as opposed to hostlers solely assigned to the roundhouse &
servicing tracks?

Gerald
