My name is Bob Nelson and I have posted here once or twice and
communicated with several of you offline regarding my grandfather, Oscar
Falkenstein, who worked for the Q from about 1911 to 1950. From about
1914 until 1932 he operated a derrick (No. 204614) out of Galesburg,
Illinois. He lost his right arm near Lisle, Illinois in a mishap in
1932 and the Q assigned him to the turn bridge at Prescott, WI, which he
operated until his retirement in 1950.

I have created a folder ("Q Derrick Photos") in the Photos section and
have uploaded six pictures: his 1914-15 Hamilton railroad watch; his
turn bridge over the St. Croix River at Prescot (taken in the 50s after
he had retired); his "B. and B. Gang No. 1 (1931); his derrick (exact
date unknown but most likely from the 20s); and two shots of him and his
derrick cleaning up a wreck on the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad
between Abingdon and Berwick, Illinois taken May 23, 1922. Hope they
are of general interest.

Does anyone know what a "B. & B. Gang" was?

I am still looking for old Q personnel information. I am tring to find
his date of hire and what he did prior to becoming an engineer. Any
help appreciated. Feel free to write me offline at
bobnelson@comcast.net <mailto:bobnelson@comcast.net> .

Regards,

Bob
