I was surprised to learn that SD's were used in commuter/suburban service on
the CNW.  Not so much now on the Q.  The SP and Reading also did the same.
Apparently they were well suited for the application in that they could handle
the frequent and rapid start/stops without destroying the traction motors.  FM
trainmasters and SD's were used in similar service on many roads for the same
reasons.  Sorry I can't offer a more scientific explanation but something about
HP to TE ratio and the limits of the motors.

OR look at any of the pst 1940's Loco assignment sheets that BRHS has reissued
(also one appears in one of Corbin's books & look for those with Steam
generators. Any such would have either been assigned to branch line pass
service like the Edgemont-Deadwood run or as 'protection' and thus may have run
at least once or even regularly "in the day".

For the record, C&NW used Geeps in local service with steam generators of course
