Express prepares to leave Denver on December 12, 1969." Photo is by F.H.

Further info from Page 12:
"Inaugurated on December 12, 1969 by predecessor CB&Q, the Beef Express was a
weekly train, running eastbound only, and designed to speed Colorado and
Nebraska beef to Chicago and East Coast markets. Leaving Denver every Friday
evening, the Beef Express made Chicago by mid-afternoon Saturday and its
connections reached New York Sunday night. Refrigerated trailers of dressed
beef were the sole commodity carried. But the beef business was not as great as
anticipated, so the train turned to carrying U.S. Mail loaded in a container
and piggyback trailers. Quite unlike the beef situation, though, there was
entirely too much mail, especially for a single, once-a-week train. As a
result, late in 1972 the Beef Express stopped running; it was replaced by a
brand new daily through freight, No. 100 (and its westbound counterpart No.
71)."
