For those younger readers wondering why there would be 1968 BN TT's if the
merger did not occur til 1970, this clarification. The merger WAS set to be
consummated in "68 with TT's being issued BUT the Supreme Court stepped it &
stopped it. It took another 2 yrs for CB&Q, GN & NP to work things out with
the Feds (ICC et al) and complaints from competing RR's, shippers, etc. to get
the merger accomplished. There are indeed 1968 BN TT's in existence BUT they
were not put into effect. The first 'real' BN TT's were 1970. The "68's thus
are a novelty - they are 'real' as opposed to 'fantasy' (think Walthers' decals
for PC steam) but never used. They do show up @ our meets at times. And of
course the 1970's are different from the 1968's as there had been abandonments
& train discontinuances in the interim.
A personal note: people are sometimes asked 'where were you when you heard
about Pearl Harbor, JFK's assassination, 9-11, etc'? I recall exactly where I
was when the Court announced the delay in the BN merger: the lounge of the
Masonic Lodge Hall in North LaCrosse with a mbrship dominated by Q & Milw emps
as both had shops & Div. Hdq bldgs in the area for a long time. (LaX for the Q
however by then was no longer a stand-alone Div but a fair # of staff worked in
the former Div Hdq bldg, crews still changed, etc). Various members & visitors
were talking, watching a TV, etc prior to the 7:00 pm meeting. A ret'd Q RR'er
had just commented to the group that the Burlington would soon be no more when
the TV news announced the Court decision. The consensus then was 'now that the
lawyers have it, no telling how long it will be'. Overall though the Q
employees present were not concerned either way as an 'end-to-end' merger among
friends was not seen as a threat plus Mgt & the Brotherhoods had come to
satisfactory agreements for jobs, etc. At least that was true of those working
at No. LaCrosse. The men present that night were a mix of hourly & salaried
and all had pretty much the same positive view on the merger. I can only guess
there may have been a bit of a different reaction among NP & GN emps that night
though as that is where a lot of duplication would result from merging. Recall
NP/GN shared an office bldg in the Twin Cities literally divided by one thin
wall. (and lest someone comment, SP&S was also part of the merger but already
was a wholly-owned GN/NP line)
