Not "among the fastest" butTHE fastest trains in the country per all the "Speed
Surveys" in Trains magazine in the 50's & 60's with the Morning & Afternoon
Twins, either direction, alway taking 1st plus couple other 'places' in the Top
Five. (usually the stretch between E. Dbq & Prairie du Chien setting the
segment record and the overall Chi-Twin Cities taking the overall).

The EPB also would get mentioned for its east leg on the Q.

The grade improvements obviously worked. IIRC the Twin Zephyrs were among the
fastest passenger trains in the country in later years.

Not to mention the curve and line relocations along the Mississippi, many of
which can still be seen or in some cases driven as WI-35 is where the old line
was in many places before causeways.

On the old C&I and CB&N between Rochelle and Savanna there are numerous
points where the ROW alingment and grade were changed over the decades to
reduce curvature and grade. Many of these can only be seen from the ROW.

Rode it just a "few" times !
