the original plans called for beefen up the east and west prier that are
currently there and build a new lift span at the shore and float it into
place.in trying to drill down thruogh the river bottom muck they found to much
wood-sheet metal-steel-rock for the drill to go through.they were using about
96" or 108" casino drill down through a steel tube.now that they have change
and are building to complete new priers i don't know what there idea is about
the lift span.yesterday dave lotz post in the files section a drawing of the
current draw span with the new west prier shown in blue and the the new east
prier will be in the middle on the first fixed span east of the current draw
span.they weretrying to drill down about 75' below the river bed to reach
bedrock

Bill
Are they building a totally new Lift Span or do they intend to use the old Draw
Span as the Lift Span as they did when they rebuilt the bridge over the
Illinois river at Beardstown?

So now they are going to replace two sections of the bridge? The drawspan and
the first fixed span east of the draw?

OK – I give up!!! I have loaded a new file to the File Area called Burlington
Bridge New Pier.gif – I’ve marked what I think is the location of the new pier
in blue.

Hi Bill,
OK – I’m officially confused…help me get my bearings…
Below I’ve mapped out a diagram as if you were looking at the bridge from the
south side. (I hope Yahoo doesn’t scramble it)
The G’s indicate where the plate girder spans are, the PP’s mark where the
existing piers are.
I’ve put an X where I envision where they are adding the new pier from your
description. Are they planning on shortening the length of the new lift span
from 302’ to 227’?

they have moved appox. 75 yds east and are building a complete new prier and
this will put the west pier in the middle of channel on the west side of the
draw span. They had to do this as they could not bore down to bedrock next to
the east prier because of the debris laying on the bottom of the river.no
construction has started yet on the new loift span
