I agree...Freeman got it right...This maneuver, much more dangerous than the
conventional "drop" involved a change in direction of the engine....
I've participated in making many of the "conventional drops" but never
participated in nor observed the "Dutch Drop"...
Leo or any other trainmen ever made a "Dutch Drop"...????
Many think that making a drop was an illegal maneuver, bu it wasn't....In
fact...IIRC there were rules as to how it should be done ie "the engine should
be run on straight track where practicable"...Also drops should not be made
over a spring switch...that would be a "no brainer".
All of this stuff is probably highly illegal in todays railroading...You could
probably be fired for engaging in such doings.
Any "drop stories"...Leo...Archie...
RE: the Dutch Clock devise...that would be comparable to what today....at
least in my railroading days was called an "Impact Recorder". If you read the
old RAILROAD MAGAZINES you'll find several stories where train crews "fixed"
the clock as Charlie reported in his post.

Dutch Drop -Rarely used method of bringing a car onto the main line
from a spur. The engine head into the spur, couples head-on to the
car, and backs out. When the car is moving fast enough the engine is
cut off, speeds up to get back on the main line before the car, then
moves forward ahead of the junction between the main line and the
spur so the car rolls out behind the engine.
