in the '20's the railroad started to replace depots in larger towns with more
traffic. ie: Ottawa, Princeton, Kewanee, Lisle, I am sure Osceola and Mt.
Pleasant. In most towns the old depot generally wood was moved and used as a
freight house. These were the new brick depots. A lot of towns that did not
get the newer depots bitched enough the Railroad came in and remodeled the
depots. Eaves were cut back to a more modern location with all gingerbread
removed, windows and doors and in most cases floors replaced with the exterior
coated in Stucco.
I think the last Railroad owned stucco depot was Buda which is now gone. If
you look at the Lisle depot it has been turned 90 degrees and all the stucco
has been removed to a more as built depot. Seems the roof has been rebuilt as
well.

Subject: [CBQ] Seeking Carthage, IL CB&Q depot information

I'm considering modeling Carthage, IL as part of an O scale/P:48 layout
Circa 1943/44. Toward that end, I'm looking for photos and other
information about CB&Q facilities and operations in and around Carthage,
IL. I know that the depot exists, or did as recently as last year, but
I'd like to locate drawings/diagrams, images and other information
pertinent to the 1940's.

One question for example...Was the depot always stucco, or was it
originally a more conventional board and batten or clapboard sided
structure? If the latter, when the stucco was applied? Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Rob Adams
Wellman, IA
