As Gerald says, there were no restrictions to how long you stayed in a dome on
Burlington trains. I recall getting on the westbound CZ late at night at Red
Oak Iowa and finding plenty of folks who gave up their coach seats to catch
sleep in the darkened dome.
My experience on the Union Pacific Domeliner City of St. Louis was different.
The Union Pacific closed the dome at about midnight until early the next
morning (5 or 6 am?).
I had a friend in high school who shared a story with me of when he and a
friend ran away from home. He told me they stowed away on the California Zephyr
at Omaha, boarding simultaneously with a large family and their kids. He and
his friend stayed in the dome all the way to California, living on a large bag
of M&M's until a suspicious Zephyrette caught on and had law enforcement and
child protection services representatives meet the train at Sacramento. After
detraining, they eventually were flown back to Omaha.
