HI;when i lived in michigan in the late 60's,there was a saw mill that cut a
lot of railroad ties,most were red oak,swamp oak,hornbean,buckeye,pignut and
catalpa,for hard wood.also seen softwood ties cut out of larch and tamerack
which i think were ties for yard and branch lines.hope this helps some.. ken
