Lenny,
Not sure if the KENDALL COUNTY RECORD has a web site but a good history of
this original depot is in the article on pg 13 this week.
Briefly using other research I've done and bits from this article Here a
quick summary. The depot was built in 1853/54 shortly after the Chicago and
Aurora built from Aurora to Mendota with service between the two points
completed on October 20,1853 per Overtons book (Burlington Route). The reason
the depot doesn't look like a std Q one is was built by the C&A. Similar to
why the old CB&N depots didnt look like Q depots.
In 1942 the current owners grandfather bought the depot from his employer(
the Q). In 1943 it was moved by teams of horses and what is described as a
giant turntable to its current location. Prior to the move the frt house
portion was cut off and its disposition isnt discussed. The family has owned
the home/depot for 3 generations. The depot you reference was the
replacement. Of course it sure didnt look like a Q depot either !
The Record will be in all the local stores until next Weds.
