Bob, In those days, a train was under the control of the conductor. I doubt he would leave his office behind. Any move outside yard limits required a way car. Many transfer runs came back "way car light". There is an excellent photo in one of the Spoor books of a Q O1-A in Kansas City returning to Murray Yard with just a way car.
