Gentlemen: When I was still gainfully employed , I was a chemist . My lab
had a gas chromatogragh that I had programed . Since I still like to use
regular Floquil I ran the their Diosol through I got the print out . You
are indeed correct - almost - about the composition of Diosol . It is
38% by vol toluene , 41% by vol xylene and 21% by vol Solvesso 100 ( a
long evaporation rate aromatic hydrocarbon solvent ). Getting the toluene
and xylene is not difficult , but the Solvesso 100 is only available
through chemical suppliers . The problem you will have using just a blend
of toluene and xylene is that you have no "tail " solvent . THe " tail"
is what makes the paint flow out to a nice smooth finish . My suggestion
on a mix would be 40% / 60% by vol. toluene / xylene and avoid spraying on
really hot days .
Finally - don't use acetone or methyl ethyl ketone ( MEK
) as these solvents love to turn nice plastic models into trash can filler
.
Hope this helps .

Diosol is a mixture of toluene and xylene (and maybe something else?), but I
don't think Floquil specified the ratio. I suspect either would work, but
both are very toxic, hence reduced availability.

I asked the same question on the HOn3 site and a chap identified as Raggs
replied that heut found Xylene to be a better match for Diosol, that is
smelled the same and was available at Sherwin-Williams, but, also at Home
Depot. I have not had a chance to try this but I am also open to other
suggestions. I have several replies which suggested MEK but I am most
reluctant to use that in my house, even with a power vented spray booth.
