Take the piece of string about a arm spread in length. Someone else always cut
them and they were in a bundle. Bring the two ends together and over lap
about 6 inches so they lay side by side. Now take one and tie it around the
other with a half hitch(The first knot in tying your shoe) around the second
then do the same with the other side. This will result in the string tied
together but the knots will slide together when you pull on them. The orders
are folded with clearance stapled to the orders and folded so they are about an
inch wide and slipped between the two knots then pulled tight. Now put it on
the hoop(although they were more a wye with the two small end having a notch to
hold the stings and strip of steel at the wye junction to slip the string
under to hold the string in the hoop and still let it slide out easily
Use to hoop up orders and messages at Aurora Tower and order for the, if I
remember right 9 dinky's that originated in the Hill yard and there was a
flashing order board just west of Farnsworth on the lead. You had three sets
for each dinky. The head end of course but the other two you never knew where
the crew would pop out or if they would.
At Congress Park we use to hoop up waybills for trains which picked up at
Westmont, or Downers Grove. It was always fun to be standing in the middle of
track one with a dinky coming at you trying to hoop up to a freight on main 2.
Just watch and be ready to jump back if the dinky came over Maple Ave.
