I enjoy reading the Dinky and seniority list comments. I grew up in Aurora in a railroad family. My father hired out on the Q in 1914 and retired in 1958 (minus a short tour in France in 1918). As a freight conductor in 1925, he lost his right leg, due to faulty equipment, while doing a setout near Hinsdale. He spent the next 33 years as a baggageman, with a wooden leg. When he retired he was #1 on the baggageman's list, #5 on the conductor's list and #14 on the brakeman's list. He never wanted to return uniform service. His only uniform service as a conductor was on a motor car and they had run over an 18 month old child playing between the rails near Spring Valley. He covered the body with his coat and walked to Spring Valley to report the accident. It always bothered him. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
