Michael,
Your suppositions are all correct.
In 1943, the CB&Q played host to the original high-speed tracking tests of
the ACF-built troop kitchens. The Q's mechanical department knew these cars
very well.
As a result, when the cars were auctioned in 1947, the Q jumped on
them--buying 300 cars immediately. This freed up some 40-ft box cars in
express service for much-needed grain service.
The Q forces at Havelock did the absolute minimum on refurbishing these
cars. They stripped the interiors and installed horizontal bars on the
windows (which were not plated over in the initial rebuilding). The as-built
doors were retained on sides and ends, the double AB-1B brakes were retained
and the buffers and diaphragms were as-built. The roof stacks (for the
stoves) were plated over as was the coal bin hatch. The other roof vents
were retained.
The roof was covered with black asphaltum as built, this was not changed.
The cars were spruced-up with a fresh coat of "Pullman green" and the
lettering was the Q then-standard extended Railroad Roman in Dulux gold.
The original Allied Full-Cushion trucks were retained until mid-1957 when
they were forbidden for interchange by the AAR. ASF A-3 Ride Control trucks
replaced them at this time.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [CBQ] 8600-8899 series "troop kitchen" express cars - exact paint
scheme?
Listees,
I'm in final stage of creating 8600-8899 series "troop kitchen" express car
for my Exposition Flyer. Tomorrow would like finish the paint job.
Before that, I need some advice.
1. At the time period 1947 - 1949 did those cars have roman style lettering
(the gothic style came later). Right?
2. At that period were those cars panted "pullman green" with "dulux gold"
(dark yellow) lettering. Right?
3. Trucks were black (right?).
4. What about roof? Pullman green or black? (I have really no idea. I've
seen in color only model (HO) of the later paint scheme with gothic
lettering. The roof was black, but not sure if that model was correct ....)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (Sooner the better - hope to finish
painting tomorrow)
Thanks and regards,
Michal Basta
