Last weekend I passed through Spokane, WA and photographed some BNSF power with
CB&Q roots.
First was BNSF 3008 on 9-25-09 backing its consist into the yard at Yardley.

BNSF 3008 has the distinction of being CB&Q's first GP40, built as the 170 in
December 1966. After the BN merger it was renumbered BN 3000. Later it was
rebuilt by MK 9/89 emerging as BN GP40M 3509 and after the BNSF merger was
renumbered BNSF 3008.
After the BNSF 3008 was in the clear BNSF's Lind Turn with BNSF 3022 leading
left headed west.

BNSF 3022 was built as CBQ GP40 638 in February 1968. At the BN merger it
became the BN 3038 and later BN 3523 after being rebuilt.
So what was the reasoning for two separate number series for the GP40's?
170-189 and 620-639. 20 units in each series. Never have heard an explanation.
Returning home on 9-28-09 I stopped at Cheney, WA west of Spokane where I
noticed WRIX 1617 sitting in the yard.

I knew it was ex-CB&Q but wasn't aware it was a GP7. Thought those were all
gone a long time ago. The 1617 is the ex-CBQ 261 built in 1953. At the BN
merger it was renumbered BN 1617, the number it carries today.
Not a bad selection of former Burlington units in one trip.
