The date nails were used in the era when tie preservation procedures were under developement, to gather statistical data about what procedures gave the best result. Once reliable tie treatments were decided upon, the need for date nails was obviated. I know that recently (last 20 years or so at least) dates are embossed in the end of the ties, at least in my area of the country. The only Q nails I've seen are round-head, some are short-shank (1-3/4") and some are long-shank (2-3/4"). The numbers are raised from the head which is 1/2" diameter. But that is not a valid statistical sample by any means...
