Andrew,
My first home, at 5407 Fairview Ave. in Downers Grove, IL, was built
in 1967 on a Downers Grove Street Department road supply lot.
Cinders, salt, stone and other road maintenance materials were stored
there for years. However, I am not sure what the source of the
cinders was. Some could have been from the Q suburban engine terminal
on the west side of town. I never thought about it before and have
long since moved from that location. We moved into the house when it
was new and I do know that getting grass to grow there was a real
problem. I used some of the cinders for fill (the majority had been
removed before the lot was sold by the city) and the rest was covered
with numerous loads of top soil and my sweat! Thanks for reminding me.
