IIRC there were two (at least) different penalties or "arbitraries" when a
double was made

Just a "regular" double would pay the lower amount...probably 25 miles

If you picked up at the last station before the hill where the double was made
you got 100 miles.

During my few brief tours I never was "blessed" with a penalty double, but just
remember hearing the matter discussed.

I'm open to correction and/or enlightenment on these matters.

Pete

Again using R.K. Johnson time books I learned that on a few occasions the
Rock Falls job on Tues and Fridays when heading for Eola would "turn" at
Earville and/or Somonauk and return to Rockfalls before again heading to Eola.
This leads me to believe that they had such heavy trains that they were
required to bring it over from Rockfalls in bunches.

Also did see an occasional 25 and 100 mile "double" on the west bound trip
to Rockfalls. For those who aren't up on the jargon this means the crew
doubled a hill because the engine couldn't pull anymore and they took the
train over in pieces and then put it back together.
