Bob-

As a Bohemian who has straightened his share of nails and other "thrifty" 
practices, I will bow to your description of the spending habits of the 
CB&Q.....
but it is a shame that the C&NW was called the "cheap and nothing wasted".....  
the Q spent money when it could save more.... but it was VERY THRIFTY
if not cheap.
It wasn't forced to penny pinch when spending some money would improve the 
return.... but instances of how closely the Q watched the pennies are legion...
I recall Mr. Greenwood's story about the electric lights in the coal bin...... 
as one classic example.
