The St Louis Museum's M&StL RS1 has as been much discussed numerous times on
the MSTL list in the past. Several years ago we
learned the St Louis museum was interested in getting rid of the RS1 as it no
longer fit it's focus on railroads in St. Louis.
There had been efforts to get it repainted into M&StL colors, and a few list
members offered funds to assist, but this project
fell through, I think when the museum decided it was surplus. Then there was an
effort to get it moved to a museum that would
honor it's Louie heritage, Boone Scenic Valley was mentioned as one possible
home. Again this did not happen. The problem has
always been funding, and the issue of moving a locomotive that can not move
under its own power.
While they did not get the St Louis engine, the Boone & Scenic Valley followed
through with the interest generated and painted an
RS1 they already had on hand in M&StL colors, once it was restored to operation.
There are two MSTL steam engines still in existence, the one restored and on
display in Mason City, IA, #457 a 2-8-0. The other is
a sister engine #471 and is derelict and in private hands in MN. A number of
the 2-8-2's went to the Algoma Central, but I believe
they are all gone. A few diesels may still be around.
