Gerald,

Yes, as of 06-01-73 Custer SD did still have an Agent.
517 Washington, Custer SD, 57730, 605-673-2854.
What it has to do involving a "occupied depot" I have no
idea. At that same time I'd ask why we had a Depot at
Custer SD at all. Very little business and soon to be
gone.

Russ

Last agent occupied depot on BN was the former CB&Q depot at Custer, S.D.

Andy what you say was common for many railroads west of the Mississippi, in
small communities and rural areas where housing was
not always readily available. The second floor would be above the office and
waiting room, but no generally over the freight house
end, and often consisted of three or four rooms that were essentially the
depot agent's home or apartment. Nor was it a home away
from home, this was home, period. This ensured the agent was there if the
3am needed orders handed up. These two story depots were
most typically a wood depot, and not very large. Many roads had standard
plans for these depots.

Larger depots with second stories were typically a division point. The 2nd
floor housed offices, engineman's room, etc. Perhaps a
storeroom and a bunk room for crews. But no living quarters beyond that bunk
room.
