Not to mention many railroads were self insured, so Sanborn literally ignored 
railroad owned property if there was no hope of
selling the owners insurance. The maps are great for location of and 
information about insurable buildings. But only give
approximate location of RR facilities. Nor were maps drawn of areas where no 
insurable buildings were located, ie think of
railroad facilities no near a business district. So the maps are notorious 
incomplete for the areas we are most interested in
seeing.
