The Mars light was definitely in play on #10 when I rode it in December of
1966.  You could see it from the dome as you highballed thru Nebraska at night.

The upper clear mars could be illuminated when the train was in forward
direction or would soon be in forward direction. There is a switch for the Mars
and the engineer had the option of turning it on or off. This is why you will
see trains operating with the Mars light off, but headed in a forward direction.

There may have been operating rules on the Q when the Mars was to be turned on,
but they seemed to be getting less use closer to the Burlington Northern
merger. At least that is the way it appears in photos of motive power.

The lower red Mars light came on automatically when the train went into
emergency braking. The red mars light could also be turned on by the engineer
when the train was making a backing movement.

Wondered if someone could briefly describe the Q's use of the Mars light in
conjunction with the headlight on E and F units in the 50s?
Many thanks,
Steve
