The upper clear mars could be illuminated when the train was in forward 
direction or would soon be in forward direction. There is a switch for the Mars 
and the engineer had the option of turning it on or off. This is why you will 
see trains operating with the Mars light off, but headed in a forward direction.

There may have been operating rules on the Q when the Mars was to be turned on, 
but they seemed to be getting less use closer to the Burlington Northern 
merger. At least that is the way it appears in photos of motive power.

The lower red Mars light came on automatically when the train went into 
emergency braking. The red mars light could also be turned on by the engineer 
when the train was making a backing movement.

conjunction with the headlight on E and F units in the 50s?
