Downers Grove yard was a suburban service terminal from the time it moved
from Riverside until Sept 1952(IIRC).
I just went by it today and there are still two of the long tracks left but
everything else is either sold for development or converted to M-O-W service.
These two tracks are used for staging of cars for Pepperidge Farm today and a
runaround point for work trains, etc. There was a time(up well into the 70s)
when the "Congo" would bring west cars from the IHB interchange at Congress
Park to Downers for p/u by westbounders.
Suggest you try the Downers Grove historical society for photos and track
diagrams. I am doing research on an article for the Zephyr(someday) that will
feature a hand drawn map of the lower and upper yards and how the suburban
trains were switched in the evening rush as of 1948.
